Forklift Safety for Those Truly Serious about It | Toyota Equipment

my fingers are crossedJust how serious are you about safety? Back when Toyota?s ?System of Active Stability? [SAS] was introduced we thought that it was the killer app for forklifts, one that would make the trucks a sure fire ?hit? with the safety minded. I think it?s helped but I?m uncertain that safety at the end of the day has as much value when measured by the wallet as it does if you only consider corporate rhetoric.

We went through SAS in a previous post while in a recent article in Warehouse News from the UK, there was additional support for this game changing feature. I?ll share the article with you here in hope the safety of employees be given the consideration it should be.

An independent test of forklift trucks from four well-known brands has demonstrated exceptional stability for the Toyota Tonero engine powered forklift, equipped with the Toyota System of Active Stability (SAS). The test was conducted by the independent testing organisation Union Technique de l?Automobile, du Motocycle et du Cycle (UTAC).

Test conditions followed a proposed European standard for dynamic lateral stability. While all four forklifts passed the independent test, only the Toyota Tonero achieved an excellent score on all requirements. Forklift stability is a key safety factor, and these test results demonstrate that Toyota forklifts with SAS are best equipped to help companies drive down driver and damage costs related to tip-over accidents.

The independent testing organization UTAC tested four standard, commonly available forklift trucks including the Toyota Tonero. The test conditions were based on a proposed European norm. The Toyota Tonero passed with flying colors, outperforming the proposed standard ? and the other tested forklift models ? in a test designed to measure dynamic lateral stability.

Dynamic lateral stability refers to the ability of a forklift truck to stay upright and not tip over while in motion. The dynamic stability test ? with two professional test drivers having differing levels of forklift driving experience ? involved making sharp turns at speed to determine whether the forklift would become unstable. Particular attention was paid to whether the forklift?s inner rear wheel left the ground, as this indicates vehicle instability and could lead to the forklift tipping over.

During more than 200 rounds of testing, the Toyota Tonero far exceeded the other forklift trucks being tested. In particular, the Toyota Tonero was the only truck where the inner wheel did not leave the ground with either driver, demonstrating the exceptional dynamic lateral stability provided by Toyota SAS.

Tony Wallis Operations Director for Toyota Material Handling UK stated ?By providing excellent stability, Toyota SAS can help prevent accidents, injuries and damage to goods. Loss of lateral stability leading to vehicle tip-over is a major cause of serious forklift accidents and injuries, and is the single largest cause of forklift accident fatalities. It is a clear indication of our focus and desire to improve workplace safety for operators and drive down damage costs in business, we strongly believe we can support businesses in establishing safe, healthy, productive workplaces, by providing high-quality materials handling products, services and solutions, as this test demonstrates, Toyota SAS helps keep our forklifts stable, protecting drivers, goods and the trucks themselves. SAS addresses costs in two key areas ? driver costs and damages costs, which together can account for more than 70% of the life cycle cost of your forklift. Forklift accidents can have particularly serious consequences for companies.

Toyota SAS can help to reduce the risk of forklift accidents, protecting your employees and your bottom line.?

SAS: six unique features that help protect drivers and goods

As the focus on workplace safety increases across Europe, Toyota SAS stands out as technology that can actively help to reduce the risk of accidents and drive down materials handling costs. Unique to Toyota forklift trucks, SAS constantly monitors forklift operations and automatically takes corrective action when it senses factors that could lead to truck or load instability. There are six advanced SAS functions: the unique swing lock cylinder, mast front tilt angle control, mast rear tilt speed control, the active steering synchroniser and one touch fork leveling control, as well as speed reduction when cornering on Toyota?s 3-wheel counterbalance forklift models. All SAS functions work together and help to keep the truck, driver and goods safely on the move ? and productivity on the up. This way, SAS helps drive down costs for business.

Test results, certified by UTAC

In the forklift industry, current standards do not cover risk exposure related to dynamic lateral overturn (sideways tip-over) accidents. Research conducted jointly by the Institut National de Recherch? et de S?curit? (INRS) in France and the University of Hamburg in Germany has led to a protocol for testing dynamic lateral stability. The test procedure works by creating dynamic lateral overturning movements in machines travelling along a curved trajectory.

This test protocol, which has been submitted to the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) for evaluation and approval, provides a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of forklift trucks. By applying this test protocol, the French testing agency UTAC validated the excellent stability afforded by Toyota SAS.
Committed to safety

Toyota Material Handling strongly believes the company can support businesses in establishing safe, healthy, productive working environments, by providing high-quality materials handling products, services and solutions. Apart from this test, the company is setting up other projects to further expand its contribution in these areas.

Marcelo Giugale: Can Governments Create Industries?

It is an old debate. Back in the '50s and '60s, from Asia to Latin-America, an idea caught fire among development economists: governments should try to create industries. Typically, civil servants would pick industries that could employ lots of people or substitute imports, required huge upfront investments, were considered strategic, or just smacked of modernity. Those industries were then treated like "infants" -- in need of all kinds of support until they could survive on their own. They were given tax breaks, protection from foreign competitors, cheap credit, subsidized energy, public contracts, even capital injections courtesy of the taxpayers. Think of toys, trucks, refrigerators, cement, steel and petro-chemicals - -they were all going to be produced locally, whatever it took. (If you are over 50 and grew up in a developing country, fond memories of your family's car or TV set are surely coming to your mind: it carried a national brand, cost a fortune and broke down all the time.)

The experiment ended in tears. Yes, there were a few successes in East Asia that astonished naysayers. (Legend has it that one of the world's leading banks told Japan in the 1960's that it would never be competitive at making cars.) But in most cases, the infants failed to grow and dragged the economy down with them. Consumers were saddled with lower-quality products at higher prices, banks with unpaid loans, and governments with covering the losses of uncompetitive companies, year after year. Corruption added an ugly veneer to the whole thing -- after all, you were giving away benefits to a chosen few. By the late 1980's, countries were busy selling off their public enterprises, opening their economies, and letting markets decide what was produced where. That, we thought, would be the last we would hear about "industrial policy."

Well, you'd be surprised. Today, developing countries rich in oil, gas or minerals are desperately looking for policies to diversify their economies, not just because the price of natural resources could unexpectedly tank, but because the business of extraction does not create enough jobs. They have money to invest -- think Africa. Even in countries that are doing well, governments are searching for ways to make their industries more high-tech and avoid being trapped half-way up the technological ladder -- think Brazil. But everyone wants a new -- read, smarter -- industrial policy, one that avoids the mistakes of the past. They just might be on to something.

To start with, new industrial policy is not about bureaucrats picking products to manufacture domestically. If anything, it is about the private sector pointing out to policy-makers the obstacles that make it unable to sell abroad -- from a flickering electricity supply to corrupt customs officials. Far from closing the economy, the goal is to join the global market. Enterprises remain private. Everyone in the industry can compete for public support; it is not a privilege given to a favored firm or businessman. When public money is involved, it is mainly to improve logistics, infrastructure or technology. Obviously, regulations that restrict trade are done away with first. A good example: a $10 million a year public investment in controlling skin parasites in cattle could unlock Ethiopia's potential as a major exporter of quality leather, assuming the virtual ban on leather exports was lifted.

In fact, the new approach is really about information and coordination. If a public agency knows something that can help businesses prosper -- say, a better technique to get organic certifications -- it passes it along for free. If some regulation or procedure hurts investors -- say, customs clearances that take too long -- they have a friendly ear in a ministry to get it fixed quickly. The corrective actions usually call for coordination among many parties: it is not practical for hundreds of producers by themselves to try to negotiate free-trade agreements, build ports or draft laws. Instead, the government takes the lead on those initiatives. Of course, all this assumes that private business and public officials get along, share a common objective, and have a system in place to communicate. And it is almost impossible when the basics to operate an industry -- from a stable currency to respect for property rights -- are not in place. That's why industrial policy, new or old, no matter how well-intentioned, doesn't works when the rest of your economic policy is in shambles.

But how about new products? Who decides what else to export? There are some mathematical calculations that technocrats can make to sniff for markets where their country could do well, where it has "comparative advantage." (To get a sense of what comparative advantage means, ask yourself this: if you can mow the grass much better than your gardener but are also an attorney making $1,000 an hour, would you ever touch the lawnmower? Lawyering is your comparative advantage.) But, in general, it is better to let business-people do what they do best: to find opportunities to make money. You can help a bit by, for example, letting them locate close to each other -- in what are called "clusters." In Silicon Valley, Guadalajara or Seoul, creative people feed on each other. Still, don't expect that totally out-of-the-blue products will always emerge; more likely, your industries will branch out gradually into ventures where they can use some of the knowledge they already have -- from shoes to handbags, not satellites.

So, will this "new industrial policy," which sounds less exciting and less revolutionary than its previous version, work? Let's say that it cannot hurt. If done in the open, private-public collaboration is a win-win. But you are entitled to be skeptic, especially if your government has not been able to deliver simpler services -- like a teacher in every class, clean water and a decent police force. That is, if you live almost anywhere in the developing world.

Tina Fey won't host Oscars -- who should?

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

He received decidedly mixed reviews for his Sunday night stint hosting the Oscars. She was mentioned, along with comedy partner in crime Amy Poehler, as a dream host for the future. But both Seth MacFarlane and Tina Fey have now gone on record saying they won't host next year's show.

Paul Drinkwater / NBC via AP

Tina Fey, seen here hosting the Golden Globes with Amy Poehler, says she won't host the Oscars.

In a comedy bit that opened the awards show, William Shatner muttered, "Why couldn't they get Tina and Amy to host? Why can't Tina and Amy host everything?"

Fey told The Huffington Post that she was flattered "to be Shatnered," but said she won't be looking to host the show.

"I just feel like that gig is so hard," Fey told the site. "Especially for, like, a woman -- the amount of months that would be spent trying on dresses alone ... no way."

When writer Mike Ryan pushed Fey, asking if there was a "one in a million chance," she still declined, saying "I wish I could tell you there was."

As for MacFarlane, he responded to a Twitter fan who asked him if he'd host again with "No way. Lotta fun to have done it though."

With Fey and MacFarlane out of the running, the Academy organizers will have to start combing through a long list of possible hosts. Recent hosts have included Billy Crystal, James Franco and Anne Hathaway, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, Hugh Jackman, Jon Stewart and Ellen DeGeneres.

It's a list that heavily favors comedians, but there the Academy walks a fine line. Edgy comics like MacFarlane and three-time Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais may appeal to a younger audience, but also run the risk of alienating viewers who like their Oscar humor safe and friendly. And there's no denying it's a great deal of work for a famous name who arguably doesn't gain much from taking the job but has a lot to lose if his or her hosting night goes awry. It might even be easier to win an Oscar than to successfully host one.

Who would you like to see host the 2014 ceremony? Vote in our poll, and tell us on Facebook.

T-Mobile USA Reports First Customer Growth Since 2009 But ?Challenges Persist Unchanged? As It Waits For Apple Deal To Kick In

t-mobile iphone 4Deutsche Telekom, owner of T-Mobile USA, today reported its Q4 and full-year results, and it looks like it is starting to arrest some of the declines in its North American operations: overall subscribers at T-Mobile USA now stand at 33.4 million -- a rise of 0.6% compared to a year ago, and the first time since 2009 that the number has not declined. The company, however, also noted that "challenges persisted unchanged" in the region as revenues declined by 1.4% to to ?3.8 billion ($5 billion) and service revenues specifically were down by nearly 10% to $4.1 billion, as the carrier sits tight and waits for a marketing deal with Apple to kick in this year.

?Internet of Things? Can Cut Emissions 19%, Report Finds

Machine-to-machine (M2M) technologies could help reduce global GHG emissions by 9.1 billion metric tons by 2020, equivalent to 18.6 percent of global GHG emissions in 2011, according to a report by AT&T and the Carbon War Room.

?M2M? refers to technologies that facilitate connectivity of physical infrastructure and devices ? the so-called industrial internet, or internet of things. This will reduce the amount of energy and fuel required to perform tasks, thus lowering GHG emissions without restricting production or economic growth, the report explains.

Machine-to-Machine Technologies: Unlocking the Potential of a $1 Trillion Industry says global M2M device adoption will skyrocket between now and 2020, from 1.3 billion to 12.5 billion devices, and says larger enterprises are adopting M2M at a greater rate than small and medium businesses (see chart).

These technologies will also make society more efficient, which the report says is a ?money-making endeavor.? The report predicts connected machines will generate cost savings and new revenues that could add $10-$15 trillion to global GDP.

By 2020, M2M applications look most promising and profitable in four sectors, according to the report. These are:

  • Energy: M2M such as smart-grid technologies could save more than 2 billion metric tons of CO2e in the energy sector. M2M can also facilitate the switch to renewable energy, thus further reducing emissions.
  • Transportation: M2M could save about 1.9 billion metric tons of CO2e by making planes, trains, trucks and ships more efficient.
  • The built environment: This sector could use M2M to save 1.6 billion metric tons of CO2e, by increasing energy efficiency of heating, cooling and ventilation, lighting, electronics, appliances and security systems.
  • Agriculture: M2M could save 1.6 billion metric tons of CO2e by reducing deforestation, and increasing efficiency of planting, seeding, harvesting, fertilizer use and water use.

But a lack of universal standards for M2M applications and hardware and a lack of performance data, in addition to marketing challenges and a long sales cycle, present barriers to scaling M2M technologies, the report found.

To overcome these barriers, the report suggests convening experts to work on universal standards. It also recommends that companies offering M2M technologies build data collection and analytics into their offerings, and create new business models and sales strategies.

In a report published in late 2012, GE said the industrial internet could boost energy efficiency and account for more than $82 trillion in economic activity by 2025, Energy Manager Today reports.

Donor, Know Thy Charity: The Best, Biggest and Worst Nonprofits

Nearly everyone has felt the pinch of the economic slump in the past five years. But despite tough times, Americans tend to be a remarkably generous nation of people. According to Grantspace.org, based on recent reports from Giving USA Foundation?and the?Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, ?Total charitable contributions by individuals, corporations, and foundations was an estimated $298.42 billion in 2011, up 4 percent in current dollars and 0.9 percent in inflation-adjusted dollars from a revised total of $286.91 billion in 2010.?

This breaks down to an average of nearly $1,000 for every man, woman and child in the nation. Not bad, right? But how much of that money is actually going to the causes we care about? How do we know if the sacrifices we make are feeding the hungry and housing the homeless, rather than lining the pockets of a corporate CEO?

There?s a lot of information floating around out there about who makes what, and how effective various charities are. Unfortunately, much of what is passed around is either outdated or totally inaccurate. So I decided to do my own investigation to see who are the best out there when it comes to putting my hard-earned charitable dollars to work, especially compared to some of the biggest, most popular nonprofits we tend to give to.

Of course, there are lots of criteria we could use in deciding where to give our money. Some prefer local organizations, where they can see direct results of their gifts, right in their own community. Others lean toward historically established, widely known nonprofits who have proven their staying power over time. And of course, there are factors like the organizational mission statement, their stance on particular social issues and whether that charity has been in the news lately (not always a good thing).

For my own purposes, I decided to boil it down to three factors: size, CEO compensation and organizational efficiency. Again, there are many ways to determine the latter, though having spent more than a dozen years in the nonprofit fundraising profession myself, the one that people tend to be most interested in is efficiency. The easiest way to measure this is to break out what percentage of the charity?s budget goes toward ?indirect,? or administrative costs (like the CEO, fundraising, and other administrative staff), compared with the amount committed to ?direct services.?

To be clear, ?direct services? doesn?t refer to money or goods given directly to those in need. Generally, it includes all staff and organization costs related to those direct services. So whereas a Vice President or a financial officer would be an indirect expense, a case manager or nurse ? along with direct assistance, meals and housing ? would be lumped together as direct expenses.

Finally, because there are literally more than a million charities in the United States, I wanted to boil my list down to those nonprofits that were large enough for most of us to know about them. So I looked only at organizations with annual budgets of $100 million or more.

THE BEST

So, given these factors, who are the best of the best? Following are five major-league top performers:

Name: Direct Relief International
Mission: Healthy people. Better world. Since 1948.
Annual Budget: $405,035,176
Efficiency: 98.8%
CEO Salary: $294,097

Name: The Conservation Fund
Mission: America?s partner in conservation.
Annual Budget: $242,376,138
Efficiency: 97.4%
CEO Salary: $429,647

Name: United Nations Foundation
Mission: Connecting people, ideas and resources with the United Nations.
Annual Budget: $192,737,803
Efficiency: 86.5%
CEO Salary: $399,949

Name: Teach for America
Mission: Building the movement to eliminate educational inequity.
Annual Budget: $270,472,850
Efficiency: 83.4%
CEO Salary: $364,062

Name: The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International
Mission: Enabling Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace.
Annual Budget: $236,590,554
Efficiency: 86.9%
CEO Salary: $166,981

THE BIGGEST

Interestingly, none of these made the top-ten list of most followed charities, according to Charity Navigator. So how do the biggest of the Big Boys compare to our frontrunners listed above? For the five organizations operating with an annual budget of $1 billion or more, it?s a mixed bag:

Name: American Red Cross
Mission: Helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
Annual Budget: $3,422,010,386
Efficiency: 92.2%
CEO Salary: $501,122

Name: Feeding America
Mission: The nation?s food bank network.
Annual Budget: $1,179,643,651
Efficiency: 97.2%
CEO Salary: $524,052

Name: Smithsonian Institution
Mission: Seriously amazing.
Annual Budget: $1,101,404,223
Efficiency: 72.1%
CEO Salary: $517,318

Name World Vision
Mission; Building a better world for children.
Annual Budget: $1,078,549,155
Efficiency: 85.6%
CEO Salary: $379,861

Name: Food for the Poor
Mission: Serving the poorest of the poor.
Annual Budget: $1,050,829,851
Efficiency: 96.8%
CEO Salary: $388,979

THE WORST

Finally, the list would hardly be complete without including some of the biggest offenders. Keeping with the same criteria, we looked only at those charities with annual budgets of $100 million or more. This means that, although there are some bad guys not listed here, these are the ones with the broadest reach, and they?re also the ones you?ve most likely heard of:

Name: Paralyzed Veterans of America
Mission: Maximizing the quality of life for veterans and all people with spinal cord injury or disease.
Annual Budget: $114,364,700
Efficiency: 33.1%
CEO Salary: $189,983

Name: American Diabetes Association
Mission: Cure, care, commitment
Annual Budget: $197,368,988
Efficiency: 66.5%
CEO Salary: $545,950

Name: March of Dimes
Mission: Improving the health of babies
Annual Budget: $207,290,112
Efficiency: 65.9%
CEO Salary: $545,982

Name: Hadassah, The Women?s Zionist Organization of America
Mission: Devoted to Judaism, Zionism, and American ideals.
Annual Budget: $136,654,319
Efficiency: 48.1%
CEO Salary: $78,888 (three other administrators are paid more than $170,000 each)

Name: Ducks Unlimited
Mission: A world leader in wetlands conservation.
Annual Budget: $155,701,461
Efficiency: 77.0%
CEO Salary: $257,839 (two other administrators are paid more than $280,000 each)

Don?t see your preferred charity on the list? Visit Charity Navigator yourself and look them up. This service assesses more than 6,000 nonprofits around the world. Another good resource is Guidestar, which posts nearly every nonprofit?s financial reports for public review.

Perhaps the best advice I can offer is to be as discriminating about the charities you support as you are about the products and services you pay for. Some of the most notorious charities make the most overtly emotional appeals, hoping to create a ?feel good? moment for donors. But every nonprofit organization should freely offer up their annual report and copies of their 990 financial statements upon request. If they won?t, chances are they?re either trying to hide something or they?re simply too disorganized to fulfill the request. Either way, the lack of transparency is telling.

An educated public is an empowered public. Tell your dollars where to go and hold those you entrust with your gifts accountable. Our collective impact yields far more than a warm, fuzzy feeling. We can change the world if we?re smart about it. Do your homework; it?s worth the extra effort.

Hubble sees a glowing jet from a young star

Feb. 24, 2013 ? The Hubble Space Telescope has captured a new image showing an object known as HH 151, a bright jet of glowing material trailed by an intricate, orange-hued plume of gas and dust.

It is located some 460 light-years away in the constellation of Taurus (The Bull), near to the young, tumultuous star HL Tau.

In the first few hundred thousand years of life, new stars like HL Tau pull in material that falls towards them from the surrounding space. This material forms a hot disc that swirls around the coalescing body, launching narrow streams of material from its poles. These jets are shot out at speeds of several hundred kilometers (or miles) per second and collide violently with nearby clumps of dust and gas, creating wispy, billowing structures known as Herbig-Haro objects -- like HH 151 seen in the image.

Such objects are very common in star-forming regions. They are short-lived, and their motion and evolution can actually be seen over very short timescales, on the order of years. They quickly race away from the newly-forming star that emitted them, colliding with new clumps of material and glowing brightly before fading away.

SMART Communications announces availability of Firefox OS ...

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at February 25th, 2013

Firefox OS is here in Manila!

We never expected these to arrive in Philippine shores so fast, but yes, the Firefox OS phones are finally here c/o SMART Communications. Last month, Firefox OS was rumored to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2013 (that?s 2 days ago) and it appears that these rumors are true. The Firefox OS joins the mobile phone OS wars together with Android, BlackBerry 10, iOS, and Windows Phone 8.

What makes the Firefox OS so neat? Well, these things should be quite affordable because of its open-source nature (Mozilla is a foundation and thus a non-profit). The apps are based off HTML5 which means that it?s like having one huge web browser on your phone and these ?web apps? allow you to various things. What I?m driving at: these guys are here to keep the web open, which is a huge commentary and rebuttal against the many app ecosystems out there ? with lots of fingers pointing at Apple. Firefox OS will be huge. they?re not trying to lock anyone in. Case in point: Ever wanted to shift to another OS (i.e. Apple shifting to Android) but didn?t because you felt that you already spent so much money on apps? With Mozilla?s new OS, the web is the platform. And they intend to keep it open.

Now this part isn?t from SMART, but according to the developer preview, there will be two phones launched initially. Here are the specs:

The Keon model
CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 1Ghz
UMTS 2100/1900/900 (3G HSPA)
GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (2G EDGE)
Screen 3.5? HVGA Multitouch
3 MP Camera
4GB ROM, 512 MB RAM
MicroSD, Wifi N, Light and proximity Sensor, G-Sensor, GPS, MicroUSB
1580 mAh battery
Over the air updates
Unlocked, add your own SIM card

Smart partners with Mozilla for Firefox OS smartphones

In line with its goal of putting the Internet in the hands of every Filipino, wireless services leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has committed to support Web pioneer Mozilla?s efforts to introduce affordable Firefox OS smartphones that run on a flexible and open mobile platform.

Smart is the only Philippine operator that has committed to distribute mobile devices running Firefox OS, which will allow carriers to tailor the phones? interface and to develop services that address the specific needs of their customers.

Other leading operators that will distribute the first wave of Firefox devices are Am?rica M?vil, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Hutchison Three Group, KDDI, KT, MegaFon, Qtel, SingTel, Sprint, Telecom Italia Group, Telef?nica, Telenor, Telstra, TMN and VimpelCom.
Mozilla is working with manufacturers LG, TCL (Alcatel), and ZTE to build the first Firefox OS devices, with Huawei to follow later in the year ? all powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon? mobile processors.

Firefox OS smartphones are the world?s first open Web devices which are free from the rules and restrictions of existing proprietary platforms. Firefox OS phones can run apps developed using HTML5 with the same flexibility as ?native apps? on other platforms.

?Firefox OS brings the freedom and unbounded innovation of the open Web to mobile users everywhere,? said Gary Kovacs, chief executive officer of Mozilla.

?With the support of our vibrant community and dedicated partners, our goal is to level the playing field and usher in an explosion of content and services that will meet the diverse needs of the next two billion people online,? he added.

Smart chief wireless advisor Orlando Vea said he is happy that Filipinos will be among the first to enjoy Firefox OS devices.

?We?re excited to see Firefox OS in the market because this will help bridge the digital divide. Its HTML5-based technology will make available affordable mobile devices with an open mobile ecosystem. This is aligned with our inclusive vision of putting mobile Internet in the hands of every customer,? he said.

Meanwhile, Smart executive vice president and wireless consumer division head Emmanuel Lorenzana said: ?Firefox?s entry to the mobile phone market will bring customer experience to another level with lower cost barrier to ownership and more choices in terms of devices and mobile apps. This will also foster a healthier and more competitive developer community. We?re very keen to see a vibrant ecosystem based on HTML5 technology such as Firefox OS.?

Mozilla announced operator rollout plans for Firefox OS smartphones before the opening of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Smart executives led by Lorenzana are in Barcelona to support the event. [END]

It?s easy to view the evolution from ?horse-drawn carriage to jetliner as a straight line of increasing energy consumption, but Atlantic editor Alexis Magrigal tells us that?s not the case. In this hour, Madrigal will discuss his book,?Powering the Dream: The History and Promise of Green Technology, in which he investigates why so many alternative energy projects have been abandoned, and the opportunities that lie ahead.

Galaxy Note 8.0 launched, takes Apple?s iPad Mini head on

After lots of leaks, rumors and outright company?forecasts,? Samsung today announced the Galaxy Note 8.0, an 8-inch iPad Mini competitor. The 1280?800 pixel display will have a slightly better PPI of 189 than the Mini and match camera specs and a quad core processor. Samsung?s Note 8.0 will also double up the Mini with 2GB of RAM and add an S-Pen for those who need/want it as well as expandable storage via the Micro-SD card slot. Just like the Galaxy Tab 7 2 it has an IR blaster with a rebranded Peel station navigation. On the down side, it won?t have LTE (only HSPA+) and it will run a slightly out-dated 4.1.2 version of Android Jelly Bean. It also weighs almost an ounce more than the iPad Mini.

Oh and it can make calls like a huge phone.

Will this go head to head against the Mini? My gut reaction is no. Samsung?s Touchwiz overlay and pen will keep these out of the hands of mainstream users. No price or launch date is yet planned but the specs tell me (720P TFT display) that Samsung is aiming for a low price. I?d expect to see this at $250 in the US probably just after it launches in the 2nd quarter in a number of Asian and EU territories.

Press release follows:

Lawmakers tour oil rig, discuss energy issues

Published: Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 6:01 a.m.
Last Modified: Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 12:15 a.m.

?A lot of people bad-mouth the industry, but if you come out here and see what these guys do, it's amazing,? said U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, R-Houma, who hosted the tour.

Scalise was joined by Republican Reps. Morgan Griffith of Virginia, Dennis Ross of Florida and John Shimkus of Illinois. Along with Scalise, Griffith and Shimkus serve on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which handles legislation tied to the oil-and-gas industry.

?We are just trying to educate them on what we do and how we do it safely,? said Lynne Hackedorn, vice president of government and public affairs for Cobalt Energy, the company that owns the rig but uses ENSCO for its drilling operation.

Through a thick layer of clouds the rig appeared as a tiny island in the Gulf of Mexico, about 100 miles from south Lafourche Parish.

Inside the $500 million vessel's control room, a wall of computer monitors is flanked by an endless view of water.

Here, Chris Johnston, general manager for ENSCO's North American deepwater operations, explained how the vessel is dynamically positioned, which means its towering operating decks and equipment sit atop massive pontoons floating in the Gulf. Eight 3,500-horsepower thrusters synchronize to keep the hulking structure positioned over its well 5,500 below the water's surface.

On Friday, crews on the exploratory rig were preparing the blowout preventer for installation before drilling can begin, Johnston said.

Hackedorn said the operation is a highly expensive risk as there is no guarantee the oil found when the rig drills 6? miles under the sea floor will be commercial grade and plentiful to the point of profitability.

It's a question that will be answered after a $200 million investment. The rig costs about $1 million per day to operate, Hackendorn said.

The rig is operated by about 280 people who work in 12-days-on, 12-days-off shifts.

James Pointer, executive vice-president of Cobalts Gulf of Mexico division, estimated the rig indirectly is responsible for about 1,000 jobs through its servicing.

And there are many more jobs that can still be filled in the energy industry.

?In all honesty, we need more people with a technical bend,? said Steve Brady, vice-president of ENSCO's western hemisphere operations.

Brady estimated the entry-level roustabout position that requires a high-school eduction and clean drug test pays $55,000 per year. He also noted rig work is a good opportunity for returning servicemen.

?We need them at all levels,? Brady said. ?A lot of the guys out there have a high-school education, and it goes all the way up to engineers.?

The congressional visit served as an opportunity for the rig operators to ask them to push for consistency in energy regulations and leasing of new areas for exploration.

?We want to see some predictability and stability in all aspects,? Brady said.

The trip came at somewhat of an uncertain time for many industries that require government oversight. If Congress does not agree on deficit reductions more than $1 trillion in across-the-board cuts to government services, a process known as sequestration will take place.

In a letter to the Senate Appropriation's Committee, outgoing Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar said sequestration will mean delays in the leasing of new federal land for oil exploration in the Gulf.

He noted some 550 exploration plans or development documents before the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will be jeopardized by the cuts.

Earlier this month, the bureau announced a lease sale in March that will open up 38 million acres in the central Gulf for exploration. It is the second lease sale for the central Gulf since the 2010 BP oil spill. It's unclear if sequestration could affect the sale.

Analysis by the Democratic staff of the House Committee on Natural Resources also noted about $8 million and 52 positions would be cut from the agency created after the oil spill to oversee the safety of offshore drilling.

?An 8.2 percent across-the-board cut could gut oversight of offshore drilling?less than three years after the BP oil spill,? the report said.

Scalise took the trip as an opportunity to highlight what he sees as a disconnect with President Obama on energy and reducing deficits.

?What we would like to see is the federal government to open up more areas,? Scalise said, referring to efforts to open federal waters off other states for exploration. ?The demand is there, but right now there are companies taking jobs to other countries.?

House Republicans passed a plan for avoiding the sequester, which would give the Department of the Interior greater leeway to determine what areas get cut, Scalise said.

Democrats' proposal for avoiding the sequester involves eliminating about $5 billion in tax deductions for oil companies, according to The Associated Press.

?It would tax American oil companies and raise the cost of production here. It wouldn't increase taxes on Saudi Arabian oil, and you would make us more dependent on foreign oil,? Scalise said. ?It's one of the most insane policies I have seen.?

Florida researchers set out to study sharks

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A group of scientists left Florida for a 20-day expedition into the habits and patterns of the Great White Shark.

A 126-foot ship named the MV OCEARCH left Jacksonville Friday. The expedition will allow scientists to study and tag Great White Sharks weighing more than 2,000 lbs.

Once the researchers wrangle a shark on board, they have 15 minutes to perform a health check on the shark and to attach a satellite tracking device. That device will send signals for up to two years, every time the shark surfaces.

Last fall, researchers aboard the ship examined and tagged a 16 1/2-foot Great White and dubbed it "Mary Lee," while off the coast of Cape Cod.

Scientists from the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota are among the researchers aboard the ship.

Could an Avocado a Day Keep the Doctor Away?

Eating avocados regularly may improve the quality of your diet and some key heath markers, according to a new analysis.

After crunching the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2001 to 2008, researchers found that eating avocados was associated with an overall better-quality diet; higher levels of HDL (the "good" cholesterol); a lower risk of metabolic syndrome; and a lower body weight, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference.

Metabolic syndrome, characterized by a cluster of symptoms, raises a person's risk for heart disease. The symptoms include blood pressure higher than 130/85 mmHg; a fasting blood glucose level of 100 mg/dL or higher; a waist circumference of 40 inches or more in men and 35 inches or more in women; HDL ("good") cholesterol levels of less than 40 mg/dL in men and less than 50 mg/dL in women; and triglyceride levels of 150 mg/dL or higher. A person with three or more of these symptoms is diagnosed with metabolic syndrome.

The Hass Avocado Board supported the study. Findings were published in the recent issue of Nutrition Journal.

For the current analysis, researchers examined the diet quality of 17,567 adults ages 19 and older who participated in the NHANES survey. Of these, 347 (2 percent) ate avocados. Their mean daily avocado intake was about half of a medium avocado, containing about 114 calories, half of which come from fat.

NHANES interviewers gathered nutrition information based on 24-hour dietary recalls. The NHANES program of studies regularly assesses the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States. Researchers calculated diet quality using the USDA's Healthy Eating Index, which indicates how closely diets follow the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

The study reported that people who ate avocados had significantly higher intakes of fruits and vegetables in general, and lower intakes of added sugars. The avocado eaters also had higher intakes of total fat, monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, dietary fiber, vitamin E, magnesium, potassium and vitamin K, along with a lower intake of carbohydrates.

Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fat, which has been associated with a lower risk of heart disease. Previous research elsewhere has found an estimated 19 percent reduction in the risk of coronary disease when the intake of monounsaturated fat is increased by 5 percent, the current researchers wrote.?

Avocado eaters also fared well in the weight department. People who ate avocados weighed on average about 8 pounds less than non-avocado eaters. The avocado group also had a lower BMI, 26.7 versus 28.4, and their waists were about 2 inches narrower. Finally, these respondents had higher HDL levels: an average of 55 mg/dL compared to 52.6 mg/dL for people who didn?t eat avocados.

The study does not prove a cause and effect relationship, only an association. The researchers acknowledge that the people in the study may not have accurately recalled what they ate; what's more, the pool of avocado eaters was small.

Still, the results are intriguing. "These findings suggest a role for avocados in improving dietary quality and possibly reducing the risk of metabolic syndrome in the United States," the researchers wrote. "Further research is needed to verify this epidemiological data and study the potential association between increased intake of avocados and other dietary components."

Pass it on: Eating avocados may raise "good cholesterol" levels, lower BMI and reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome.

Post-2014 Afghan force of 8,000-12,000 discussed: U.S

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO allies discussed keeping a NATO force of between 8,000 and 12,000 troops in Afghanistan after 2014, but U.S. President Barack Obama has not decided how many American troops will remain there, Pentagon spokesman George Little said on Friday.

"A range of 8-12,000 troops was discussed as the possible size of the overall NATO mission, not the U.S. contribution," Little said after a NATO defense ministers' meeting in Brussels.

"The president is still reviewing options and has not made a decision about the size of a possible U.S. presence after 2014, and we will continue to discuss with allies and the Afghans how we can best carry out two basic missions: targeting the remnants of al Qaeda and its affiliates, and training and equipping Afghan forces," he said.

Off the Dribble: Salley Offers a Healthy Assist

When Carmelo Anthony went on a vegetarian diet a few weeks ago and caused the biggest culinary conundrum in sports since fried chicken and beer had starring roles in the Red Sox clubhouse, John Salley could only shake his head.

Anthony?s diet was blamed for his sluggish play and the Knicks? 3-4 record during the 15-day fast.

Anthony admitted that his body felt ?depleted out there.?

But Salley, the former N.B.A. player, said that if Anthony had eaten a vegetarian diet correctly, he would have felt invigorated and anything but depleted.

And not just for two weeks but for the entire season.

For Salley, many of his salad days in the N.B.A. really were salad days. Particularly kale salad.

Salley, a 6-foot-11 power forward and center, became a vegetarian in January 1991 after he felt he had to make changes in his lifestyle, much like Anthony?s stated desire for ?clarity in his life.?

Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish or poultry, but may eat dairy products like cheese, eggs, yogurt or milk.

Salley had read a story about the Celtics? Robert Parish, whom he had always admired, and his interest in yoga and a red-meat-free diet.

While Parish?s regimen was not total vegetarian, he recently said that it made a difference in his career, helping him withstand the rigors of playing center against behemoths in the paint.

?My diet consisted of chicken, fish, seafood, salad, pasta and organic when possible,? he said. ?I had very little sugar and drank a gallon of water every day. I also ate rice and beans, peas, cabbage, mustard, collards greens and assorted nuts. I would always focus on healthy eating. My success depended on my body and I tried to do right by it. ?

His body responded with 20 years of service in his Hall of Fame career. Parish retired at 43.

Salley was striving for similar health and success.

?I was 27 and I felt I had to change my life,? Salley said. ?My knees were sore, my joints ached, I had back problems and my cholesterol was 275. ?

When he was with the Pistons, Salley visited a nutritionist in Detroit who advised him to eliminate fried foods and adopt a macrobiotic diet (grains and vegetables).

Salley, invigorated and healthy, had his best season in 1991. A defensive specialist, he had more energy and quickness and averaged a career best 9.5 points per game.

He kept his healthy diet a secret from his burly Bad Boy Piston steak-and-pork-chop teammates, who included Bill Laimbeer, Rick Mahorn and Dennis Rodman.

?I would tell them all the time,? Salley said, ?if you go into a steak house it?s not that they have a certain thing inside the dead flesh or they cook it differently. They make it the same way everybody else does. All you?re doing is eating dead food.?

Salley would search out health food restaurants with a few tables or just counter service for his diet staples of quinoa, kale, spinach, stir fried vegetables, brown rice and wheatgrass on the menu.

?It was hard to find places in 1991,? he said. ?So many times I would go into restaurants and ask the cook to steam my vegetables and make me the lightest fish.?

But it was worth it.

?I was playing so well it was crazy,? he said.

During his career, Salley, who retired in 2000, won four championships with the Detroit Pistons, the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers.

He now follows a vegan diet, which eliminates all dairy foods in addition to animal products.

?I?m eating raw,? said Salley, 48. ?And I make all my food with no sugar, no salt and no oil.?

Salley is familiar with Anthony?s foray into vegetarian living. The Knicks star followed the Daniel Fast based on the book of Daniel in the Bible, which espouses a diet of mainly liquid and vegetables.

?He felt depleted because you need to find a natural source of vitamin B12,? Salley said.

B12 is not found in any significant amounts in plant food, and a deficiency can cause fatigue, weakness and tingling in the legs.

It can also cause irritability. Anthony said his diet might have caused him to lash out at Kevin Garnett in a game against the Boston Celtics.

?He didn?t take any supplements to help his body,? Salley said. ?He did not get his body to heal. It?s like cutting yourself and not putting a Band-Aid on. He just got part of the plan right.?

Salley is working to make sure children get the plan right with food choices. He spreads the word about healthy eating in the community, having lobbied Congress for more vegetarian options in school lunches.

Although Anthony may have struggled to maintain his vegetarian diet, other N.B.A players and athletes have embraced it.

James Jones of the Miami Heat and Anthony?s teammate A?mare Stoudemire are vegetarians.

Baseball?s Prince Fielder, the triathlete Brendan Brazier, the mixed martial artist Mac Danzig, the bodybuilder Derek Tresize and the tennis player Serena Williams are among athletes who are vegans or vegetarians.

Dr. Joel Kahn, a clinical professor of medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine and medical director of wellness programs, preventive cardiology, and cardiac rehabilitation at Detroit Medical Center, has counseled Salley and other athletes about the benefits of vegan and vegetarian diets.

?A plant-based, whole-food diet low on sugar and gluten is very anti-inflammatory and ideal for rapid recovery from workouts,? he said.

Toshiba mobile RAM uses prediction, adaptation to cut power use by up to 85 percent

Toshiba uses prediction, adaptation to cut mobile RAM power by up to 85 percent

RAM remains one of the principal drains on a smartphone's battery: it's almost always in use, and it saps power even when its host device is idle in a pocket. Toshiba hasn't eliminated that demand entirely, but its new SRAM (not yet pictured here) is intelligent enough to cut a lot of the waste. The memory can better predict what power it's going to need while it's active, and includes a smarter retention circuit that occasionally wakes up to tweak buffer size while it's on standby. While these sound all too abstract, they should lead to some very tangible gains. Toshiba estimates that the SRAM chews up 27 percent less power when live, and 85 percent less when it's just waiting for action. The company doesn't yet know when the RAM will reach finished devices, but we're hoping it's soon when even mainstream phones like the Optimus F7 will ship with 2GB of RAM; that energy draw isn't going down all by itself.

closing date flexible? - Zillow Real Estate Advice

Each state has different rules for how the process works. However, yes, she should have the option to do the?inspections before she closes. Her agent should be able to explain to her the process and timeframes. For instance, in California,?buyers typically have 17 days from acceptance to do their inspections. If within those 17 days, the buyers decide that they don't like what they find, then they can walk away. If the buyers do their inspections, then remove their contingencies, at that point they are committed to the property and the deposit becomes nonrefundable.?

It's extremely important for her to get?her inspections done as soon as possible especially if she wants to do any further negotating with the seller on repairs, a credit or a price reduction. If she's looking at a single family home, I would always recommend a home inspection and a mold inspection. The home inspection will give her a general understanding of the roof, foundation, plumbing, electrical, appliances, HVAC, fireplace, etc. The mold inspection focuses on water/mold issues. So many buyers don't do a? mold?inspection, but it's so important. Water is absolutely damaging to a home and so many times there can be leaks or mold problems that the homeowner is not even aware of. I have all my buyers do a mold inspection. And depending on the age of the home and the existence of large trees on the property, I also suggest a video sewer line inspection which will let you know if there are any obstructions (such as tree roots) or clogging issues. Replacing a sewer line can be expensive and it's a good idea to know up front what you're dealing with.

Spy agencies scrounge for details on North Korean nuclear test

WASHINGTON/SEOUL (Reuters) - U.S. and allied spy agencies have found no traces of telltale nuclear-related particles from North Korea's February 12 nuclear bomb test, leaving unresolved basic questions about the device's design, according to officials in the United States, Europe and South Korea.

This lack of scientific evidence suggests that key questions may remain unanswered about the type of fissile material used in the test, which was detected by seismic sensors. It also leaves unaddressed questions about how far the North has advanced in its bomb design.

After the test, the U.S. Air Force Technical Applications Center in Florida dispatched WC-135 "sniffer" airplanes to look for traces of gas residue that could offer clues to the device's design, but those efforts apparently turned up empty, the officials said.

An Air Force spokesperson confirmed that the planes were dispatched but said no results from the missions could be released. A U.S. intelligence official said analysis from the tests "was continuing."

Based on seismic evidence, both officials and private experts say there is little doubt that the North Korean device was several times more powerful than those tested in 2006 and 2009.

While estimates of the explosive power of the latest test vary widely, most officials and experts estimate it was at least five kilotons, which is smaller than the power of the atomic bomb the United States dropped on Hiroshima in World War Two.

In a statement about the test issued through its official news agency, North Korea declared that it had used "a miniaturized and lighter nuclear device with greater explosive force than previously (and which) did not pose any negative impact on the surrounding ecological environment."

One critical question is what kind of fissile material North Korea used in the latest test.

In the two earlier tests, North Korea is believed to have used plutonium as the fissile core of its test devices.

Following international diplomatic pressure, North Korea in 2007 abandoned plutonium production. But it later acknowledged that it had built facilities to produce highly enriched uranium, another fissile material that can be used in bombs.

While plutonium is a by-product of nuclear reactors, experts say it can be difficult to build a bomb using the material because specifications have to be precise. Experts say it would be easy for North Korea to make large, if not almost unlimited, quantities of highly enriched uranium.

'MAY NOT FIND ANYTHING'

Absent the trace evidence that might have been collected by sniffer planes - and without leaked information from within the North Korean testing program - U.S. and allied officials said it would be very difficult for outsiders to determine whether the latest test involved a plutonium or uranium core.

Other key issues include precisely how powerful the device was, how it was configured and how far the North Koreans have advanced in miniaturizing a device they might eventually deploy on long-range ballistic missiles that have been under development.

Officials and experts familiar with the capabilities of sniffer planes said that over the years the North Koreans have become increasingly effective at burying and sealing their tests sites to conceal even the faintest scientific traces.

"History would teach us that the North Koreans do like to hide their secret activities and control the message," said David Albright, a private nuclear expert who has visited North Korea and talked with officials about its nuclear program.

A European national security official said the North Koreans were becoming "very effective" at hiding evidence that would offer clues to its nuclear secrets.

A South Korean official knowledgeable about the February 12 test said that most likely the North Koreans dug a test tunnel deeply and sealed it tightly to prevent detection.

"The most plausible point is the structure of the pit was made so that it wasn't a straight line that opened to the outside, but had multiple turns and also many intercepting blockades," he said.

"We need to remember that this is deep in the mountains (where) they tested that are formed of heavy rocks, not out in flat, exposed area," the official said, adding: "We may not find anything."

South Korean, U.S. and European officials all noted that the trace materials sometimes decay rapidly - in the case of highly enriched uranium within a couple of days after an explosion. The longer no traces are found, the less likely that any traces will be found.

Although "there is still some time left, the chances of finding anything is getting lower and lower," the South Korean official said.
