It's a reality that computers experience problems from time to time. When my hard drive crashed, I regretted not having backed up my data on a regular basis. This is a quick story of data loss, data recovery, and learning not to take my computer for granted.
A few weeks ago I got the dreaded blue screen on my Windows-based computer. After running some basic diagnostic software, I concluded that my hard drive had been corrupted and needed to be replaced.
I had the ability to install a new hard drive and reload my operating system; however, recovering my data proved to be far more difficult than I expected.The first thing I did was get my computer back in working order so I could research how to recover my data. The most important data for me was my email history from my Outlook program. I had saved my older emails in an Outlook archive (called a .pst file). The way the freezing method works is by hampering the drive's ability to let the needle inside the drive flex enough to cause skipping. It is when the needle skips that the drive experiences issues. I don't recommend this method; freezing a drive can cause irreversible damage to it. It happened to work for me, but this is not the norm.In the end, I was able to get my photos recovered. I left the drive hooked up to my computer and it's still functioning to this day. It seems that whatever caused the corruption in the first place has ceased, allowing the drive to function as normal. I was able to transfer my .pst files and all other important data to the new internal drive.
Even though I lucked out in the end, this whole process made me think about my data backup procedures (or lack thereof). My advice to you is to make constant backups of your data. Your hard drive can crash at any time. If it does, and you require data to be recovered, please seek help from a company that specializes in data recovery. Doing things the correct way, even if it costs more money, typically has the best end result.

There is nothing like a presidential campaign to convey a sense of urgency. There is the need to fix the economy; to show Americans how their lives can be better; to demonstrate leadership. We need the presidential candidates to step up on another urgent issue: Ending breast cancer. We all know that breast cancer is a political issue and a bipartisan one at that. The level of federal funding for breast cancer research, access to care for the underserved and the drug approval process are just some of the issues vital to breast cancer that are addressed through public policy and the political process.
Now, there isn't a candidate who would not pin on a pink ribbon and embrace a survivor. But at the National Breast Cancer Coalition we demand much more than that. We demand a commitment and a plan of action to end breast cancer. We demand leadership that will bring the world of public policy together to save lives. One of these candidates will become President of the United States. He needs to know now that ending breast cancer must be part of his agenda. It is up to us to educate the candidates about this issue. About the fact that in the United States more than 2.5 million women are living with breast cancer today and this year alone close to 40,000 women and 400 men will die of the disease. We need strong leadership everywhere -- including the White House -- if we are to finally change these statistics.
Today is Presidents' Day. Today, NBCC's advocates around the country are telling the 2012 presidential candidates that breast cancer is an urgent matter and they must do something meaningful about it. They are telling the candidates it's time to make the end of breast cancer -- Breast Cancer Deadline 2020? -- a national priority.
American voters want to elect and be guided by a leader they trust and respect. They also want a leader who has a clear vision of the future- - a president who can take on big issues and lead us all to a solution. Thanks to John F. Kennedy's leadership, his clear vision of the future -- his deadline -- his boldness to say, "In ten years, we will put a man on the moon," we achieved that seemingly impossible goal. Nearly a year and a half ago, NBCC took the lead in the breast cancer community and made a bold step when we set a deadline, Breast Cancer Deadline 2020?, a call to action to end breast cancer by January 1, 2020.
Achieving this goal will take an entirely new approach to the way we think about, research and talk about breast cancer. And it will take leadership at the highest levels.
In January, 2013 someone will take the oath of office as President of the United States of America. Now is the time to tell those who want to be standing there, taking that oath, that they must also take a leadership role and publicly commit to making the end of breast cancer a national priority.
We all need to be a member of the community sending that message. As in each presidential election campaign since our inception, NBCC is making certain the candidates understand that breast cancer must be part of their agenda. We are once again organizing Breast Cancer Caucus to give voters who care about breast cancer an opportunity to make their views known and a venue to look beyond general statements of support, sound bites or slogans to see where the 2012 presidential candidates stand on the legislative and public priorities that are important to NBCC and women living with breast cancer.
We are asking each candidate to make a public commitment to these legislative and public priorities and to answer this question, "Do you support Breast Cancer Deadline 2020?? If so, as President of the United States, what would you do to achieve its goal to end breast cancer by January 1, 2020?"
We will report their responses on BreastCancerCaucus.org.
Election Day is months away, and between now and then too many women will die of breast cancer. We must change that. So take today -- Presidents' Day -- to tell the 2012 Presidential Candidates that ending breast cancer is a matter of urgency to you. Ask them to take action and declare their support. Tell them you want them to go to BreastCancerCaucus.org and tell us all how they will achieve the end of breast cancer by the end of the decade. There's not a moment to spare.

The SJC will ostensibly decide whether lenders holding mortgages held in a securitized pool, with questions whether they in fact were validly assigned those mortgages, can start foreclosures in Massachusetts. The text of the Court?s announcement is as follows:
February 17, 2012 ? ANNOUNCEMENT: The Justices are soliciting amicus briefs. Whether the Land Court judge correctly concluded that a bank had standing to commence an action to determine whether the defendant (alleged to be in breach of her mortgage obligations) was entitled to the benefits of the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, on the ground that the bank had a contractual right to become the holder of the note and mortgage. The case is tentatively scheduled for argument in May.

Will Japan hold a referendum to scrap nuclear power?

A group of Japanese activists submitted a petition to the western city of Osaka on Tuesday seeking a referendum on scrapping atomic power, a step some hope will boost a campaign that appears to be flagging a year after the Fukushima disaster.

Plebiscites are rare in Japan -- three have been held on nuclear power as well as a number of others -- and no law exists for a national referendum. But campaigners in Osaka, Tokyo and the western prefecture of Shizuoka are taking advantage of rules that allow for referendums if the local assembly gives the nod.
Osaka, the core of Japan's second biggest metropolitan area with 2.7 million residents, receives its electricity from Kansai Electric, Japan's second-biggest utility operating 11 reactors at three plants near the city.
If a plebiscite takes place, residents will vote on whether to scrap Kansai-operated nuclear power plants.
"Deciding such an important issue should be in the hands of the voters," said Hajime Imai, an organiser of the group.
The role of nuclear power is now under debate by the central government, which has abandoned a pre-Fukushima goal of boosting atomic energy's share of electricity demand to 50 percent by 2030 from 30 percent before the accident.
The industry is under intense scrutiny, with many reactors undergoing computer-simulated tests to ensure they could withstand a new disaster. Only three of 54 reactors are on stream at the moment.
The activists submitted to Osaka City 55,430 signatures of residents, or 2.1 percent of the city's population, above the 2 percent required by legal regulations.
City assembly divided
Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto must now present a motion to the city assembly for a vote on whether a referendum should be held.
Hashimoto, a reform-minded former TV celebrity who has set up a new political party, wants to reduce dependence on nuclear power and has vowed to exert the city's right as a holder of about 9 percent of Kansai Electric's shares.
But he has shown little enthusiasm for a costly referendum.
Imai said the campaign faced a tough battle in the Osaka assembly, where major parties are split over the issue.
The anti-nuclear side has won all three referendums already held. The votes had little direct impact on national policies, although a groundswell of similar ballots could make a difference.
Imai's group is also collecting signatures for a national referendum, though parliament would have to pass a law in order for such a national vote to take place.
Fukushima shattered Japan's myth that nuclear energy was cheap, clean and safe, but the absence of a legal framework means a national vote is unlikely.
Opinion polls show about three-quarters of the public favour at least a gradual exit from nuclear power. But enthusiasm for active campaigning is waning and many voters appear to be losing hope that their opinions matter.
"I don't think that people believe in democracy much," said Jeffrey Kingston, director of Asian studies at Temple University in Japan. "A lot of people are turned off by politics and think the government does what it wants anyway."
Imai echoed the concern. "Our biggest enemy has been apathy," he told Reuters.

Catholic Monti moves to end Italy Church tax breaks (Reuters)
ROME (Reuters) ? Prime Minister Mario Monti, a Catholic crusading to put Italy's economy in order by ending entrenched privileges such as tax breaks, is striking against an unlikely target - his own Church.
Monti's government issued a statement on Wednesday night saying it had informed the European Commission that it would pass a law ending the Church's exemption from local property taxes on its properties used for commercial purposes.
Estimates on how much this can bring to government coffers have ranged from 700 million euros ($908 million) to more than 1 billion euros.
Italy's Church - once an unshakable, and some say untouchable, institution - has come under fire for what some consider unfair privileges at a time Monti has asked Italians to make unprecedented sacrifices as part of a "tears and blood" austerity plan to thwart a Greek-style crisis.
The European Commission in 2010 opened a probe against Italy to determine if tax breaks for some Church properties amounted to illegal state aid and distorted competition.
Some political parties, particularly the tiny, liberal Radical Party, and some intellectual leaders, have led a campaign to strip the Church of tax exemption on properties that are not used exclusively as places of worship.
Throughout Italy, the Church owns many private clinics, hotels, bed and breakfasts and guest houses that enjoy tax exempt status because parts of the structures are occupied by priests or nuns or have a chapel for worship.
That created a grey area where many structures were essentially commercial but covered by the religious exemption law.
The government statement said the proposal to be presented in parliament would limit the tax exemption to structures that are "exclusively non-commercial." It did not say when it would present the bill.
In mixed-use cases, such as hotels run by nuns, the exemption will apply only to the parts of the structures that are non-commercial, such as chapels and residences for priests and nuns, and the statement said the Economy Ministry - not the Church - would decide which is which.
CHURCH LEADERS NOT INFORMED
Although contacts have been going on for a few months, Monti's move to take the bull by the horns surprised Italy's Catholic hierarchy.
"We are waiting to see the exact formulation of the text in order to provide a detailed judgment," the Italian bishops' conference said in a statement.
The Catholic Church is one of Italy's largest private real estate holders and, if the Commission were to rule against Italy, Rome could be forced to order the Church to reimburse the government for unpaid taxes.
While the law would affect all religions, its impact on the relatively tiny property holdings of the Jewish and Muslim communities would be negligible.
The controversy over Church tax exemptions had been bubbling for years but boiled over in the past few months, particularly after the Monti government re-instated a local property tax on primary residences that had been abolished by his predecessor, Silvio Berlusconi.
In a 48-hour period after the austerity package was passed in December, more than 130,000 people signed an on-line petition demanding that the Church be stripped of much of its tax exempt status and pay its fair share.
At first, the Church dug in its heels, saying tax laws had to take into consideration the social benefit of many of its activities.
But, as austerity began to bite into the budgets of ordinary Italians who were forced to pay more taxes and delay their retirements, Italian Church leaders softened their stand and said they were willing to negotiate and rectify any past abuses.
